
Bone Grafting
Oral and facial surgeons are the only dental specialists trained to obtain bone grafts and place them in areas where little or no bone exists. For example, In patient with cleft deformity, there is a discontinuity due to lack of bone in the region of cleft in the upper jaw. Bone can be harvested from patient and grafted to the cleft site to correct the defect. Another frequently performed bone grafting procedure is for Dental implants. Implant sites that lack the necessary bone can be enhanced with the use of bone grafts.
Grafts may be taken from the patient, a bone allograft from a bone bank, or another source. Bone grafts are also used to treat bone loss resulting from traumatic injuries, tumor surgery or congenital defects.
